2013

Part one of the Club Finals got underway on the evening of Friday 30th August, with three matches being contested. Unfortunately for the six players taking part the light drizzle that fell throughout the evening meant a soaking for all concerned, but couldn't put a dampener on the bowls played.

The first match to finish was the Pullen final, contested by John Ackland & Richard Fear. John clearly settled first and quickly established a 13-1 lead. Richard then got into his stride and the match became a much closer affair. The early gap however was too much to bridge with John running out winner by 21-10.

Next to conclude was the Ladies Handicap, where, despite giving away a four shot handicap, Judith Meddins proved to be too strong for Jayne Illingworth, running out winner by 21-15.

The final game of the evening was the Men's Handicap, between Clive Todd and Connor Parsons. Perhaps a case of the Sorcerer versus his Apprentice?. This proved to be the tightest of matches, with excellent bowls played throughout. At 20-17 ahead the match was eventually won by Connor, who played a marvellous drawing bowl, when two down, to clinch a fine victory.

In contrast to the rain of the Friday evening, Part Two of the finals were played out on Sunday 1st September in lovely sunny conditions.

The morning play saw four matches:-

Judith Meddins and John Ackland were again victorious, this time in the Mixed Pairs where they defeated Jayne Illingworth and Andy Locker 21-15. Mike Edwards was a comfortable winner in the Senior Singles final, defeating Club Chairman Neil Giles 21-9, and in the Two Wood final Clive Todd was able to overcome David Vowles by 16-9.

The final match, the Gents Pairs, with Dave Parker and Paul Marks playing Hector Lamont and Connor Parsons was a very close affair, with nothing to choose between the pairs throughout. Going into the final end Lamont and Parsons led 21-19 and their position was strengthened as they held shots to be on the cusp of victory with just one bowl to play. Some believe he closed his eyes, but Paul launched his last bowl, put the jack in the ditch and was able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.                                   Who says bowls can't be exciting !!!

Both the Ladies and Gents Championship Finals were played in the afternoon.

In the Ladies Final Judith Meddins made it a hat-trick of final victories, in coming from behind to defeat Brenda Moses in a close encounter 21-17, whilst in the Men's Final David Vowles was able to avenge his earlier loss to Clive Todd in triumphing 21-12, to round off an excellent weekend of bowls.

Well done to all the finalists and congratulations to the winners.
